The academic field can be quite gross. In the sense that people are treated as epistemic subjects, existing as a study of interest in discourses, constructed as a "symbol" or a "sign", essentially relegated into empty categories molded and filled with meanings by intellectuals, and ultimately, the multiplicity of voices and variety of representations create a sort of violence imposed on real human beings. Woman: the curious frankenstein monster open for dissection and analysis. Gays: confused people who are involved in sexual acts analogous to a straw being stuck up the nose. Etc.
